Color in a New Light
Color in a New Light, an exhibit now open at The Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park, is a captivating journey exploring the science of color, light we can see, light we can’t see and darkness. Created with local scientists, Color in a New Light offers a deeper dive into what we might take for granted about how we perceive light and color. For instance, how black is black? What is invisible light? What is the difference between light and color? Color in a New Light boasts interactives such as a walk-in kaleidoscope, a monochrome room with sodium bulbs, an anti-gravity mirror, prisms, lenses and super-black paint.
Haunted Ghost Town
The Heritage Ranch and Ovation Theatre announced the return of The Haunted Ghost Town, an immersive, family-friendly experience at the Heritage Ranch in Encinitas. This haunt will transport visitors back to the Gold Rush era to explore the doomed mining town of Bitter Gulch and come face to face with the souls who remain trapped there. Set among restored historic buildings, this experience combines authentic details, rich storytelling based on local legends and the dark history of the Gold Rush, and bone-chilling performances by professionally trained actors in period-specific costumes. Less scary experiences suitable for young children offered 5-6:30 p.m. followed by more spine-tingling presentations recommended for ages 12+ from 7 to 9 p.m., with the last entry at 8:45 p.m. 450 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas.
LJMS outdoor concerts
La Jolla Music Society’s popular free outdoor Wu Tsai QRT.yrd Concert series at The Conrad in La Jolla has expanded with added shows in the fall. Here are the remaining events for this season: Brightfeather Duo – classical; Wednesday, Oct. 25, 12:30 p.m. Celebrate Día de Muertos with Mariachi Juvenil, featuring students from La Jolla Music Society’s own Community Music Center; Friday, Nov. 3, 5 p.m.; includes themed arts and crafts.

‘The Sound of Music’
San Diego Junior Theatre kicks off its 76th Season with a return of the beloved classic “The Sound of Music,” running Oct. 27 to Nov. 12. “The Sound of Music” will enchant audiences with its timeless story and captivating melodies. Set in Austria on the eve of World War II, we follow the journey of Maria, a spirted young woman with a passion for music, who is sent as a governess to the seven von Trapp children. Through her challenges with this broken family, Maria discovers the transformative power of love and music in the face of adversity. JT’s popular Pajama Night is Friday, Nov. 3. Junior Theatre will provide an ASL-interpreted performance on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. All Junior Theatre productions are performed in Balboa Park’s historic Casa del Prado Theatre, 1600 Village Place.
Paranormal Investigation
Take part in a Paranormal Investigation of the Davis-Horton House downtown. “The Davis-Horton House: Alive with Spirits from the Past?” Find out for yourself on an after-hours Paranormal Investigation presented by the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation. Touted by many as “the most haunted house in the Gaslamp Quarter,” the Davis-Horton House has become a highly popular place for investigating paranormal activities. Classic and modern ghost hunting devices will be used. Join your hosts for an evening of mystery and intrigue! $50. ‘Poe & Company’
Write Out Loud, an organization founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud for audiences of all ages, announces “Poe & Company,” an evening with Mr. Poe and literature of the macabre at the Villa Montezuma Museum in Sherman Heights, 1925 K St. Celebrate the strange, the inexplicable, the other-worldly with the Master of the Macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. “Poe & Company” is a one night only Story Concert, Oct. 28 with three showings: 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Seating is limited to 40 per performance.
Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands
The 46th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of bands will showcase the finest in musical and artistic pageantry, with approximately 30 high school marching bands from across San Diego County and Southern California scheduled to compete on Oct. 28. Field performances by small bands will take place in the morning at Mt. Carmel High School’s Sundevil Stadium, with field shows by larger bands set for the afternoon and evening. Following the morning field shows will be a free parade band competition on the Mt. Carmel High School campus. Food, drink and merchandise concessions will be available during the field shows. Attendees also can enjoy an exhibition performance by San Diego State University’s marching band during the evening field show. Parking is recommended in the neighborhoods surrounding Mt. Carmel High, 9550 Carmel Mountain Road.

Poway Symphony Orchestra features Eugene Drucker
The Poway Symphony Orchestra announced the opening of its 20th anniversary season with a very special performance by Eugene Drucker, violinist and founding member of the world-famous Emerson String Quartet. The concert will take place on Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. in the Poway Center for Performing Arts. Drucker’s appearance in Poway will be one of his first solo performances after wrapping up a 47-year career performing with the Emerson String Quartet.
